Off the beaten path on Western Visayas

May 8, 2017

The Western Visayas is primarily known as the hopping off point to Boracay. That island of squeaking white sand, indulgence and sin. This however, was an island I knew nothing about. Luckily, I had a good friend, Melasel, I’d grown to know on Panglao who called it her home. I flew into Iloilo, her hometown … More Off the beaten path on Western Visayas

Myo Myo’s Cooking Class – Myanmar

March 7, 2017

Myanmar as a whole was a spontaneous trip for me back in 2015 and as always, I knew I wanted to take a cooking class. It’s one method I always use to gain a better grasp of the food when introducing myself to an unknown country, culture and cuisine and that’s exactly what Myanmar was … More Myo Myo’s Cooking Class – Myanmar

Bali Manggang Cooking Class

February 19, 2017

Just about every country and culture I am introduced to, I always try discovering them through their cuisine. While exploring markets, local hotspots and trying new morsels around every corner are great ways to do this, taking a cooking class is the icing on the cake. Not only is it the opportunity to taste well-made authentically … More Bali Manggang Cooking Class

Close Encounters of the Third Protein. I could get all scientific-y here about proteins, but I'd mostly be talking out of my ass. I'm talking about meat, plant based and BUGS. Also, the old movie title sounded catchy here!! 😄 At first glance this just looks a too small portion of nachos. Look closely. It is nachos, but with a cricket salsa. I went to this unique restaurant in Bangkok, called 'Insects in the Backyard'. They take commonly eaten insects and create delectable fusion dishes that would fool anyone if they weren't aware. I've eaten all the bugs/insects I have found while travelling, but this was a unique experience. I convinced a good friend to join who would generally not be down for this and he loved it. So many people shy away from the obscure with foods, simply because that little voice in their head says it's gross. I guess what I'm saying is get outside your comfort zone when travelling, especially when it comes to the local cuisine. If your in BKK, definitely check this place out. It's a baby step to eating fried crickets and silk worms out of a bag like chips!! Has anyone else been here? .
