Polar Bear Migration

May 21, 2018

I found myself back in the icy cold of Churchill, Manitoba. The polar bear capital of the world to watch the Polar Bear Migration. I was preparing for my final trip into Nunavut on a single otter plane. We flew into an old hunting camp near Gellini River, now a viewing site for tourism. The … More Polar Bear Migration

Qikiqtarjuaq – Foraging the Tundra

February 8, 2018

Qikiqtarjuaq was a new location above the Arctic Circle for me at a time of the year I haven’t yet spent in this area of the world. The Arctic summer is a short season, where the majority of the snow does melt, the permafrost becomes spongy, flowers bloom and the tundra becomes a mosaic of … More Qikiqtarjuaq – Foraging the Tundra

Igloolik Expedition 2016 – Part 2

September 5, 2016

Bowhead whales at 11 o’clock, more at 9 o’clock. They were appearing everywhere around us, with bursts of air from their heavy breath, mist spraying a dozen feet in the crisp Arctic air sparkling in the summer sun. A powerful noise made by a dozen whales surrounding you. The sound of a giant grumbling while … More Igloolik Expedition 2016 – Part 2

Igloolik Expedition 2016 – Part 1

September 2, 2016

I’d only arrived back in Iqaluit a mere 12 hours prior and I was back at the airport on my way to my initial expedition. With a quick stop in Halls Beach, it was just a short jump between islands and there I was… Igloolik. I was looking forward to this for a few different … More Igloolik Expedition 2016 – Part 1

Isolation on Brevoort Island

August 25, 2016

I was in between expeditions staying at the staff house in Iqaluit awaiting in limbo my next departure. I knew where I thought I was going, but things change quickly. It was the morning of my initial flight, an hour before I was to head to the airport and a message came for me. Don’t … More Isolation on Brevoort Island

Pond Inlet Expedition 2016 – Part 2

August 20, 2016

The expedition began at the mercy of the tides. Pack ice and thin ice littered the floe edge preventing us from safely having a viewing platform to catch sight of the migrating narwhal. The main attraction for just about everyone who makes their way to this northern corner of the world. An animal some still … More Pond Inlet Expedition 2016 – Part 2

Pond Inlet Expedition 2016 – Part 1

August 16, 2016

I was going through quite the transition in climates… one extreme to the next. From the outback of Australia to the desert of Abu Dhabi and ending in the untouched beauty of the Canadian Arctic. An area of the world previous to last year visiting Arctic Bay for my first expedition with Arctic Kingdom, I … More Pond Inlet Expedition 2016 – Part 1

Arctic Eats – Seal

August 1, 2016

The taste of blood lingered for a while. A metallic tingle left as I noticed myself licking my lips oddly craving more. The bulging eyes were staring at me from the ice with a look of blame for what I was doing, yet I held no remorse. This was how it should be eaten… raw … More Arctic Eats – Seal

Arctic Bay Expedition 2015 – Part 2

November 5, 2015

I woke up in a large yellow tent, it was early, but it didn’t take long. Upon seeing my breath as I awoke, I knew I was actually here. I was in the Arctic Frontier, Canada’s third coast. Unknown to many, home to few, where mysterious wildlife roams and the landscape beckons. The sharpness of … More Arctic Bay Expedition 2015 – Part 2

I'm always so focused on the dishes of Thailand that I miss and crave so much, but often forget about the ridiculous abundance of fresh seasonal fruit that I gorge on throughout the days. Walking by a market stand the ripe scents of mangoes and durian. I could always smell jackfruit (my favourite), before I spotted it. Sitting down to fresh fruit smoothies was a daily occurence and generally only costing a dollar.

Khun Kae Juice Bar is right in the muu of the tourist area, but the smoothies are actually reasonably priced. Mine is avocado banana mango!! .
